Fakta om Haiti

  1. Græskar: Græskar har længe spillet en vigtig rolle i det haitiske samfund; i 1807 gjorde Haitis daværende præsident, Henri Christophe, græskar til grundstenen for landets møntfod, hvilket bl.a. betød at alle græskar blev statens ejendom. Valutaen på Haiti hedder i dag ’Gourdes’, hvilket betyder græskar
  2. Voodoo: Voodoo praktiseres i dag som folkereligion på Haiti – ofte sideløbende med kristendom. Voodoo er en 6000 år gammel religion, der i 1996 blev anerkendt på lige fod med kristendom, islam osv.
  3. Naturkatastrofer: Gennem historien har Haiti været ramt af et utal af naturkatastrofer såsom orkaner, cykloner, jordskælv, voldsomme regnskyl og oversvømmelser. De seneste naturkatastrofer inkluderer jordskælvet i 2010 (der kostede mindst 100.000 mennesker livet) samt 4 orkaner i 2008
  4. Hanekampe: Hanekampe er en traditionsrig sport på Haiti. Hanerne fodres med råt kød og stærke peberfrugter opblødet i rom for at gøre dem mere aggressive og hårdføre. Vinderen af en enkelt kamp kan indbringe mere end en gennemsnitlig månedsindkomst (ca. 67 dollars)
  5. Befolkning: Størstedelen af Haitis nuværende befolkning nedstammer fra slaver, der blev transporteret til landet fra Afrika før i tiden
  6. Port-au-Prince: Navnet på Haitis hovedstad, Port-au-Prince, betyder ’Prinsens Havn’ og stammer fra et fransk skib, der lå forankret i byens havn. Port-au-Prince blev grundlagt i 1749 og huser i dag omkring 950.000 indbyggere
  7. Diktatorer: Haiti har længe været et land præget af diktatur, uroligheder og fattigdom. I perioden 1804-1915 havde Haiti mere end 70 diktatorer!
  8. Slaveoprør: I 1801 ledte den tidligere slave, Toussaint L’Ouverture (1743-1803), knap 500.000 haitiske slaver i kampen mod de franske kolonialister. Deres sejr var det første succesfulde slaveoprør og hjalp Haiti til at etablere sig som verdens første sorte republik
  9. Flag: I 1803 skabte Haitis første hersker, Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806), nationens flag ved at rive den hvide stribe ud af det franske flag (som består af tre hhv. blå, hvide og røde striber) mens han proklamerede, at han ville ”rive alle hvide mennesker ud af nationen”. De resterende blå og røde striber repræsenterede landets sorte og mulatte befolkning. Haitis våbenskjold findes i midten af flaget
  10. Mulatter: I det 18. århundrede udviklede haitianerne omfattende tabeller over genetisk afstamning, som opdelte mulatterne i flere hundrede klassificeringer af sorte og hvide. Disse rangerede fra ’Sacatra’, som var 7/8 sorte til adskillige varianter af ’Sangmeles’, som kun er 1/16 sorte. Teknisk set er en mulat en person, der er halvt sort og halvt hvid – men termen bruges mere fleksibelt i dag
