Fakta om Paraguay

  1. Sprog: Paraguay er ét af de få sydamerikanske lande, der har bibeholdt deres oprindelige sprog (Guaraní) som et officielt sprog. Guaraní er i øvrigt et onomatopoietisk sprog, hvilket betyder at det består af lydord (dvs. ord der er dannet ved efterligning af naturlige lyde). Næsten hele befolkningen i Paraguay forstår og taler spansk, men foretrækker at tale Guaraní
  2. Navn: Navnet 'Paraguay' har en uklar oprindelse; nogle mener, at det kommer fra en stamme, der engang levede ved Paraguayflodens breder, mens andre holder på, at det har en sproglig betydning i retning af ’floden der løber mod havet’ (eller noget lignende)
  3. Chaco: Selvom den vestlige del af landet (der i kaldes i daglig tale 'Chaco') udgør 60% af Paraguays totale areal, bor kun omkring 2% af befolkningen her
  4. Etnicitet: Paraguayanerne er primært en blanding af spaniere og oprindelige guarani-indianere. Blandt alle landene i Sydamerika er befolkningen i Paraguay racemæssigt den mest ensartede
  5. Nationaldrik: Paraguays nationaldrik er en speciel form for te kaldet 'mate', som dog også findes i en del andre lande verden over (inklusiv flere af de sydamerikanske)
  6. Største gnaver: Verdens største gnaver – kapivaren (eller 'flodsvinet' som den også kaldes) – lever omkring floderne i Paraguay og enkelte andre sydamerikanske lande. De tungeste kapivarer der nogensinde er registreret, vejede hhv. 73,5 kg (en han fra Paraguay) og 91 kg (en hun fra Brasilien)
  7. Jesuitter: I 1700-tallet var der mange jesuitter i Paraguay for at omvende befolkningen til kristendommen, hvilket de også havde succes med, indtil spanierne forviste dem fra landet i 1767
  8. Krige: Tripelalliancekrigen fra 1865 til 1870 fylder fortsat meget i paraguayanernes bevidsthed. Krigen kostede livet for omkring 90% af den voksne mandlige befolkning i deres kamp mod Argentina, Brasilien og Uruguay om adgangen til havet. I 1930'erne var Paraguay igen i krig; denne gang mod Bolivia, hvilket – sammen med Tripelalliancekrigen – hjælper til at forklare den forholdsvis lave befolkningstæthed (ca. 16 indbyggere pr. km2)
  9. Helligdage: Paraguay blev uafhængige af Spanien den 15. maj 1811, hvilket derfor hvert år fejres som landets uafhængighedsdag. Herudover findes også 'Heltenes dag' den 1. marts, som markerer slutningen af Tripelalliancekrigen samt den 12. juni, der indikerer slutningen på krigen mod Bolivia. Den 30. april er i øvrigt lærernes dag, hvor landets lærere – som navnet antyder – holder fri
  10. Flag: Paraguay fik sit nuværende flag den 27. november 1842. Flaget har tre horisontale striber (rød, hvid og blå), men er meget specielt, fordi symbolerne på dets to sider ikke er ens; på forsiden findes Paraguays våbenskjold omgivet af teksten 'REPUBLICA DEL PARAGUAY' (Republikken Paraguay), hvor bagsiden er prydet med symbolet for landets skatteministerium og omgivet af teksten 'Paz y Justicia' (Fred og Retfærdighed)
