Fakta om Uruguay

  1. Kvæg: I Uruguay er der 3,8 kvæg pr. indbygger, hvilket gør det til landet med den højeste koncentration af kvæg i verden. Der er totalt ca. 12 mio. kvæg
  2. Bærbare til alle: I programmet 'One Laptop per Child' var Uruguay det første land, der købte bærbare computere til alle sine skolebørn. Eftersom der er ca. 362.000 skolebørn i Uruguay, blev der købt over 360.000 computere (ca. 100.000 i 2007, over 200.000 i 2008 og over 160.000 i 2009)
  3. Nationalsang: Uruguay har verdens længste nationalsang (Orientales, la Patria o la Tumba), som varer omkring 6 minutter. Sangen er i øvrigt skrevet af den samme mand (Francisco Acuña de Figueroa), der også skrev Paraguays nationalsang
  4. McHuevo: På McDonalds i Urugay kan man få en McHuevo, som er en hamburger med pocheret æg
  5. Fodbold: Uruguay har vundet verdensmesterskaberne i fodbold 2 gange; første gang i 1930 under verdens første VM og anden gang i 1950, hvor de slog værtslandet Brasilien i finalen. Herudover har Uruguay vundet Copa América flere gange end nogen anden nation
  6. Fodboldspillere: I perioden 2000 – 2010 eksporterede Uruguay 1.414 fodboldspillere til udlandet (det svarer til 128 fodboldhold!). Totalt eksporterede Uruguay næsten ligeså mange fodboldspillere som Brasilien og Argentina, selvom de to lande befolkningsmæssigt er hhv. 58 og 12 gange større end Uruguay
  7. Cannabis: Uruguay legaliserede i 2013 brugen af cannabis. I modsætning til de fleste andre lande hvor stoffet er legaliseret, har man i Uruguay valgt at tillade offentligheden at producere cannabis for at underbyde narkokartellerne
  8. Korruption: Uruguay er det næstmindst korrupte land i Sydamerika (kun overgået af Chile)
  9. Ægteskab: Ægteskab mellem samme køn (homovielser) har været tilladt i Uruguay siden 2013
  10. Navn: Uruguays officielle navn er: La República Oriental del Uruguay, hvilket egentlig betyder republikken øst for Uruguay (floden), men i dag oversættes navnet til landets officielle titel 'Den Orientalske Republik Uruguay'. Navnet 'Uruguay' kommer fra Uruguayfloden, men hvor dennes navn stammer fra, er usikkert. Man ved dog, at navnet har sin oprindelse i sproget Guaraní og betyder ”de malede fugles flod”
