Da Uranus til sidst ikke bev\u00e6gede sig som forventet, forudsagde Urbain Joseph Le Verrier (fransk matematiker) og John Couch Adams (engelsk matematiker og astronom) uafh\u00e6ngigt af hinanden, at afvigelsen skyldtes tilstedev\u00e6relsen af en anden planet.<\/p>\n<p>Adams sendte sine opdagelser til astronomen George B. Airy i England. Airy i England, som ikke fandt (og m\u00e5ske heller ikke ledte efter) planeten. Som f\u00f8lge heraf offentliggjorde Adams aldrig sine opdagelser.<\/p>\n<p>Le Verrier kontaktede flere samtidige franske astronomer, men de afviste alle hans opdagelse. S\u00e5 han sendte sine forudsigelser til den tyske astronom Johann Gottfried Galle, som fandt Neptun p\u00e5 den f\u00f8rste nat i sin efters\u00f8gning den 23. september 1846 (den officielle dato for opdagelsen er den 24. september 1846, da Neptun blev opdaget natten mellem den 23. og 24. september 1846). Men det var ikke acceptabelt i internationale astronomiske kredse p\u00e5 det tidspunkt, og planeten blev i stedet opkaldt efter den romerske havgud Neptun.
