2. Paaseiland:<\/strong>\u00a0Paaseiland - bekend om zijn 887 mysterieuze reuzenbeelden (moai) - is Chileens grondgebied. Paaseiland is ook het meest ge\u00efsoleerde eiland ter wereld en ligt 3700 km voor de kust van Chili.<\/p>\n

3. De Atacama-woestijn:<\/strong>\u00a0De Atacamawoestijn in het noorden van Chili is de droogste plek op aarde. Hier regent het minder dan 0,05 mm per jaar.<\/p>\n

4. Het land van de dichters:<\/strong>\u00a0Chilenen zelf noemen hun land 'pa\u00eds de poetas', wat 'land van dichters' betekent. Dit is niet zonder reden, want Chili's enige twee Nobelprijswinnaars wonnen de prijs voor literatuur (Gabriela Mistral in 1945 en Pablo Neruda in 1971).<\/p>\n

6. Ojos del Salado:<\/strong>\u00a0De vulkaan Ojos del Salado in de Andes (op de grens tussen Chili en Argentini\u00eb) ligt op een hoogte van 6.390 meter en is de hoogste vulkaan ter wereld. Ojos del Salado bevat ook een kratermeer en is daarmee het hoogste meer ter wereld.<\/p>\n

7. Economische stabiliteit:<\/strong>\u00a0Chili is een van de rijkste en economisch stabielste landen in Zuid-Amerika<\/p>\n

8. Sport:<\/strong>\u00a0De populairste sport in Chili is ongetwijfeld voetbal. Tennis wordt echter beschouwd als de meest succesvolle sport van het land. De nationale sport is rodeo<\/p>\n

9. Onafhankelijkheid:<\/strong>\u00a0De Chileense onafhankelijkheidsoorlog tegen de Spanjaarden vond plaats tussen 1810 en 1826. De nationale feestdag van Chili (Fiestas Patrias) wordt elk jaar gevierd op 18 en 19 september om de onafhankelijkheid te herdenken. Sinds 1967 is het verplicht om de Chileense vlag te hijsen op alle openbare gebouwen tijdens Fiestas Patrias. De vlag moet in perfecte staat zijn en correct aan een vlaggenmast of gevel van een gebouw hangen - het niet naleven van de wet kan boetes tot 40.000 pesos (ongeveer 80 USD) tot gevolg hebben.<\/p>\n

10. Naam:<\/strong>\u00a0De oorsprong van de naam 'Chili' is onbekend. Velen geloven dat het komt van het indiaanse woord 'tchilli', wat 'sneeuw' of 'diepste punt van de aarde' betekent.
