About Al Pacino in the1990s

During the 1990s, Al Pacino’s career saw several significant moments. In 1990, he earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Big Boy Caprice in the successful film “Dick Tracy,” a performance acclaimed by critic Roger Ebert as scene-stealing. That same year, he reprised his iconic role as Michael Corleone in “The Godfather Part III,” though the film faced challenges during pre-production, including script revisions and actor withdrawals.

In 1991, Pacino starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer in “Frankie and Johnny,” a movie adapted from Terrence McNally’s off-Broadway play. Pacino’s role as a recently paroled cook who embarks on a relationship with a waitress received mixed reviews but allowed him to showcase his compelling on-screen presence.

The following year, in Martin Brest’s “Scent of a Woman,” Pacino delivered a remarkable performance as the irascible, blind U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor. Notably, he also received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “Glengarry Glen Ross,” making him the first male actor ever to receive dual acting nominations for two different films in the same year, and he won for his lead role.

In 1993, Pacino appeared alongside Sean Penn in the crime drama “Carlito’s Way,” portraying Carlito Brigante, a reformed gangster. He then starred alongside Robert De Niro in Michael Mann’s “Heat” in 1995, marking the first time the two legends appeared on-screen together.

In 1996, Pacino directed and starred in the theatrical docudrama “Looking for Richard,” which featured selected scenes from William Shakespeare’s “Richard III.” The production boasted a talented cast, including Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, and Winona Ryder. Pacino also played the role of Satan in the supernatural thriller “The Devil’s Advocate” (1997) alongside Keanu Reeves, a film that achieved significant box office success.

In 1997’s “Donnie Brasco,” Pacino portrayed gangster “Lefty” in the true story of undercover FBI agent Donnie Brasco, played by Johnny Depp. In 1999, he took on the role of “60 Minutes” producer Lowell Bergman in the multi-Oscar-nominated film “The Insider,” starring opposite Russell Crowe. Additionally, he appeared in Oliver Stone’s “Any Given Sunday.”
