About Norway
Norway, located in Northern Europe on the Scandinavian Peninsula, is surrounded by water, including the Skagerrak inlet, the North Sea, the North Atlantic Ocean (Norwegian Sea), and the Barents Sea. It shares land borders with Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Norway boasts an elongated shape, a rugged coastline with numerous islands, and a mountainous terrain, with 32% of the mainland above the tree line.
The country’s mountain range is geologically connected to those in Scotland, Ireland, and the Appalachian Mountains in North America. During the last glacial period, ice sheets covered most of Norway, carving deep valleys that eventually became the famous fjords when the ice melted. Today’s glaciers in the mountain areas are not remnants of the ice age.
Norway’s climate was warmer in the past, causing glaciers to melt almost completely. The land is still rebounding from the weight of the ice, particularly in the eastern part of the country and fjord interiors. This slow process has transformed old seabeds into productive agricultural lands.
