Fakta om Estland

  1. Valg online: I 2005 var Estland det første land i verden, der afholdt et politisk valg over internettet
  2. Kratere: Estland har den højeste koncentration af meteorkratere i verden (det højeste antal meteorkratere pr. km2)
  3. Hovedstæder: Selvom Tallinn er Estlands eneste officielle hovedstad, har landet som noget unikt en række uofficielle hovedstæder med hvert deres særpræg; eksempelvis er Tartu den kulturelle og intellektuelle hovedstad, mens Pärnu er kendt som ”sommer-hovedstaden”
  4. 2 uafhængighedsdage: Estland har to nationale uafhængighedsdage. Estland blev uafhængige af Rusland den 24. februar 1918 og igen den 20. august 1991 efter 51 års besættelse
  5. Mindst religiøse land: Estland er verdens mindst religiøse land; kun 16% betragter religion som vigtigt i deres dagligdag, mens hele 78% ikke anser religion for værende vigtigt. De resterende 6% procent har enten nægtet at svare eller svaret ’ved ikke’. Dataene stammer fra undersøgelser foretaget af Gallup i årene 2006 – 2009
  6. Paul Keres: Mere end 100.000 mennesker deltog, da den estiske skakmester Paul Keres (1916 – 1975) blev begravet i 1975
  7. Kiiking: Esteren Ado Kosk opfandt sporten ’kiiking’ omkring år 1996. Sportens navn stammer fra det estiske ord ’kiik’, der betyder ”gyng” eller ”sving”. Sporten involverer en stor gynge, der kan rotere 360 grader rundt. Jo mere kraft man lægger i svinget, jo længere bliver gyngens arme. Rekorden er i dag 7 meter og 2 centimeter, og holdes af Andrus Aasamäe
  8. Gratis transport: Siden 2013 har al offentlig transport i hovedstaden Tallinn været gratis. Tiltaget blev gennemført for at få færre biler i byen og samtidig gøre tilværelsen lettere for byens mindre bemidlede borgere
  9. Skove: Omkring 61% af Estland er dækket af skov, hvor de mest almindelige træarter er fyr, gran og birk
  10. Skat: I 1994 blev Estland det første land i Europa, der introducerede en ”flad” skatterate på 26%, som gælder for alle borgere på tværs af alle indkomststørrelser. Den nye universelle skatterate erstattede de tidligere 3 skatterater for personlig indkomst samt 1 for virksomhedsindkomst. Eksemplet blev senere fulgt af Litauen (i 1994) og af Letland (i 1995)

Selvom Tallin (øverst) er Estlands officielle hovedstad, er der flere uofficielle hovedstæder i landet; heriblandt Tartu (til venstre) som er den intellektuelle hovedstad og Pärnu (til højre) som er “sommer-hovedstaden”
