Fakta om Zambia

  1. Navn: Zambias navn stammer fra Zambezifloden. Ordet ’Zambezi’ stammer fra det lokale ord ’yambezi’, der betyder ”alles hjerte”
  2. Hovedstad: Hovedstaden Lusaka var oprindelig planlagt til at huse 200.000 mennesker - nu bor der over 1,5 millioner! Zambias første hovedstad var byen Livingstone
  3. Vandfald: I Zambia findes totalt 17 vandfald – 10 af dem findes i den nordlige del af landet. Det største, smukkeste og mest kendte er Victoria Falls i den sydlige del af landet på grænsen til Zimbabwe
  4. Vejr og klima: Fra oktober til april er der regnsæson i landet, hvilket indebærer flere ’regnstorme’ og mest af alt minder om en østasiatisk monsun. Klimaet er ellers mildt og temperaturen bliver kun sjældent 35 grader
  5. Termitter: Termitbo i Zambia kan ”vokse” sig lige så store som menneskeskabte hytter
  6. Beboelse: Store dele af Zambia er tyndt befolket og langt størstedelen af landets befolkning bor i det mest udviklede område kaldet ’Line of Rail’. I området findes en jernbane, som sammenkæder Kobberbæltet (et mineområde, hvor der er meget kobber) med hovedstaden Lusaka og den sydlige grænseby Livingstone
  7. Minedrift: Der har været minedrift i zambia i mere end 2000 år, hvor især kobber og jern er blevet udvundet. Kobber er fortsat Zambias vigtigste naturressource og landet er verdens 5. største kobberproducent
  8. Fattigdom: Zambia er ét af verdens fattigste lande og rangerer lavt på UNs Human Development Index. 64% af befolkningen lever under fattigdomsgrænsen. 14,9% af alle børn er undervægtige
  9. David Livingstone: Den første europæer der kom til Zambia var portugiseren Francisco de Lacerda i slutningen af det 18. århundrede. I det 19. århundrede kom flere europæere til landet. Af disse var briten David Livingstone den mest prominente med sin vision om at ende slaveriet vha. ’kristendom, handel og civilisation’. Byen Livingstone er navngivet efter ham
  10. Nordrhodesia: I 1888 fik den britiske virksomhed ’BSA Company’ rettighederne til mineraler i en del af landet, der lidt senere blev til Nordvest Rhodesia. I modstykke hertil blev den anden halvdel af landet navngivet Nordøst Rhodesia. I 1911 blev de to dog samlet til Den Britiske Koloni Nordrhodesia. Sydrhodesia var det nuværende Zimbabwe. I 1964 blev Zambia et uafhængigt land og det har siden haft 3 forfatninger
