Fakta om Peru

  1. Majs: I Peru dyrkes der mere end 55 varianter af majs, hvilket er det højeste antal varianter i verden. I Peru kan man derfor få majs i næsten alle tænkelige farver - inklusiv gule, lyserøde, lilla, røde, brune, hvide og sorte!
  2. Kartofler: Kartoflen stammer oprindeligt fra Peru og i dag findes der derfor over 3000 varianter i landet. Et gammelt mundheld blandt stolte peruvianere er “Soy mas Peruano que la papa”, hvilket betyder: ”Jeg er mere peruvianer end en kartoffel”
  3. Grillede marsvin: Marsvin er en traditionel ret i Peru, der serveres sprødstegt med det hele – hoved, hale og ben. På peruviansk kaldes marsvin ’cuy’, fordi de laver lyden ”cuy, cuy”. Marsvinene grilles og serveres typisk med kogte kartofler og evt. også andet tilbehør såsom peberfrugter eller bønner
  4. Naturressourcer: Peru er verdens 6. største kaffeproducent og ligeledes verdens 6. største producent af guld. Herudover er Peru en af verdens førende producenter af sølv, kobber, bly og zink. Peru har ydermere en af verdens ældste petroleum-industrier og producerer desuden noget af verdens fineste bomuld (Pima og Tanguis)
  5. Nationaldrink : Perus nationaldrink hedder ’Pisco sour’ og laves af Pisco brandy, citroner, sukker, vand, æg, is og toppes med bitter
  6. Cerro Blanco: Verdens højeste sandklit hedder Cerro Blanco og findes i Sechuraørkenen i Peru. Fra top til bund måler den hele 1.176 meter!
  7. Inkariget: Inkariget opstod i 1300-tallet og havde deres hovedsæde i byen Cusco, som ligger i den sydlige del af Peru. Spanierne ankom til Cusco i 1533 og gjorde den til en del af deres imperium. I 1535 etablerede spanierne den nuværende hovedstad Lima
  8. Lima: Over 25% af Perus befolkning bor i dag i Lima. Befolkningen er primært peruvianere, der nedstammer fra europæere eller de såkaldte ’mestits’ (dvs. en blanding af de oprindelige indianere og de udefrakommende europæere)
  9. Iquitos: Højlandet i- og omkring Andesbjergene udgør 2/3 af landets areal og bebos næsten udelukkende af indianere, der taler Quechua (det samme sprog som inkaerne talte). Øst for Andesbjergene ligger en sparsomt befolket jungle, hvor den største by hedder ’Iquitos’. Byen kan praktisk talt kun nås via havgående både, der skal sejle omkring 3.700 km ad floderne i Amazonas for at nå frem
  10. Peru i dag: I Perus senere historie har der været skiftende perioder med demokrati og diktatur. Fattigdommen blandt den indianske befolkning affødte guerrillabevægelsen Den lysende Sti (Sendero Luminoso), som dog blev slået næsten helt ned. Dette har naturligvis ikke løst problemerne med fattigdom og produktion af narkotika
