About Pete Rodriguez

Pete Rodriguez, born on April 16, 1932, in The Bronx, New York, is an American pianist and bandleader with Puerto Rican heritage.

Rodriguez is best known for leading the Latin boogaloo band, Pete Rodríguez y Su Conjunto. Their standout track, “I Like It Like That” (1967), achieved national recognition by charting on the Billboard charts. Over the years, it has been covered numerous times, including a rendition by the Blackout All-Stars for the 1994 movie soundtrack of “I Like It Like That.”

The song gained further popularity as the main ident soundtrack at Odeon Cinemas from 1998 to 2003. It was also featured on the fictitious Latin music radio station “Radio Espantoso” in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. Notably, “I Like It Like That” and “Oh, That’s Nice!” (1967) were sampled in Cardi B, Bad Bunny, and J Balvin’s 2018 hit, “I Like It.”

The song “I Like It Like That” also made an appearance in the film Chef (2014). Furthermore, “Oye Mira” was sampled in the 2021 song “Vielen Dank” by the German hip-hop band 187 Strassenbande, reaching the #5 position on Germany’s Offizielle Deutsche Chart on May 28, 2021.
